The potential for violence by spectators at sporting events is a societal marker that impacts athletes, parents, and their respective communities. Social media platforms advertise amateur videos of grownups physically attacking crowd members before turning their anger toward game officials. Yet, the origin of public rampage predates the technology that has raised our consciousness toward acknowledging the problem.
In 1976, the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) published a research study to evaluate violence among sports fans while outlining possible solutions. The forty-seven-year-old report states that “Factors contributing to the potential for violence either in the crowd or of the crowd include the significance attached to the sports event or its outcome, the composition of the crowd, and emphasis on team rivalry, a prevalence of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of norms concerning acceptable spectator behavior.”
Sporting events are designed to build relationships while paying homage to athletes who graciously share their talents with supporters. The competitive environment directly reflects its community members; you have stakeholder rights to command a safe space. If the dynamics at your child’s games are shifting in an unfavorable direction, sound off and demand better conditions now!
