Botox Party

An emerging trend in so-called modern indulgence is causing waves - and much concern - for patients seeking DIY cosmetic skin treatments. Thousands of patients report that at-home Botox parties satisfy the trifecta for social networking, self-care, and a touch of rebelliousness. These captivating soirées are advertised as transforming mundane makeovers into vibrant community experiences. Attendees revel in the opportunity to connect with friends and indulge in a touch of rejuvenation. But, some dermatologists are sounding the alarm on Botox parties by advising consumers to think twice about the associated risks.

According to an article published by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michele Green, "There are a number of good reasons why if you are invited, or are tempted to have a Botox party, you should hold back." Clientele are routinely enticed with reduced price points for injections that cost twice as much at a medical spa or plastic surgery clinic.

However, Green cautions prospective patients that unlicensed practitioners offering discounted services are skimping on essential safety measures. She states, "When it comes to administering Botox, you want a trained professional to identify the precise treatment area and where the injection needs to take place... If you're having Botox at home, can you be sure of the qualifications and experience of the person carrying out the injections?"

In August 2018 the BBC interviewed former Botox party enthusiast Rachael Knappier. She shared her story of receiving DIY lip fillers "given by a beautician at her friend's house" that caused her "lips to swell massively." An investigation revealed that the filler may have been injected into an artery, placing Knapper at risk for infection, facial paralysis, tissue necrosis, and stroke.

Another cause for a pause that Dr. Green raises is the inability to identify the source of DIY Botox injections. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures the quality of medications through a rigorous process of regulation and oversight. Pharmaceutical companies must adhere to strict guidelines and regulations to ensure the safety, efficacy and quality of their products.

In 2015 the FDA alerted medical practitioners and the public about a counterfeit version of Botox discovered in the US. Although similarities exist between the imitation product and the FDA-approved Botox injection, a single detail distinguishes the brands; the ingredient list. Licensed healthcare providers receive continuing education training to remain informed about medication errors that place patients at risk. Green advises, "When you have Botox carried out at a medical practice, you can be more confident that the supply chain is correct."

Inhibitions - and the ability to secure emergency care - dampen with each glass of Merlot at Botox parties. Professional clinics are routinely designed to transfer patients to a higher echelon of care if individuals have an untoward reaction to aesthetic treatment. Green says, "... if there are problems or side effects with the treatment, which can happen, you are in the right place to rectify the issue quickly and safely."
